Jason Martin Interview

At the corner of Broadway and East 10th street in New York City, Jason Martin’s installation titled ‘Power Animal Systems’ draws the attention of all who pass by it. As part of NYU’s Steinhardt gallery, the installation occupies several street level storefront windows featuring larger than life photos of people dressed as brightly colored animals illuminated by a chilling neon glow. Rarely do unassuming New Yorker’s walk by this display without taking a second look. The unexpected nature and peculiarity of this installation make it both intriguing and inspiring. In Jason’ words, ”These are attempts to bring inter-dimensional, species-queer, animal/human hybrids into a collective reality.” Visit Jason’s website to learn more.

What is the message you are attempting to spread through the creation of your animal/human hybrids?

The creatures are actually attempting to contact you. They really exist. They made me do this. Hybridism of any kind is a potential threat. But they don’t see it that way. They are saying they are of an order.

Do you have an object, motive, or goal for creating and promoting the animal/human hybrids?

My role here is facilitator.  I call myself artist and musician but when it comes to these creatures, I’m helping them as best as I can as technician and actor.

Anything else to add?

Hello? Hello? Yes, I’m with the phone company, and we’re doing a quick line check, New York. Have we got a clear signal? Okay, then: we need you to stare at the animal people and tell about what happens. I can be reached at the office: me@jasonmartinwebsite.com
